Free farrowing systems

Free farrowing houses have been developed to provide more space for the sows to move around. This contributes to better animal welfare. There are various types of free farrowing pens. Each type has different characteristics, meaning that each type needs a specific light plan.

Optimising the free farrowing house

Although each type of free farrowing house is different, the general areas of attention with regard to light are similar. How the lamps are positioned and the light intensities can both make a big difference. It is very important to direct the piglets to their nests in free farrowing systems as this will decrease piglet mortality. Using the correct lighting will also stimulate the sows, which will ultimately benefit the wean-to-serve interval.
