Traditional farrowing house
In traditional farrowing houses, sows are kept in crates located in an individual pen. In this system, the piglets can roam freely around the whole pen.
Optimising the traditional farrowing house
To optimise the light climate in a traditional farrowing house, it is important to look at both the location of the lights and the light intensities. Lighting can be used to direct the piglets to the nests; this decreases piglet mortality and can boost piglet performances such as weight gains before weaning. Sow fertility for the next phase will also be optimised.
