The all-in-ONE poultry light meter

Data = knowledge. This is the core principle of the HATO ONE: the only all-in-one light meter in the market. It is a must-have for every poultry specialist who aims to improve animal welfare and performances by means of lighting.

HATO ONE: Why?

Poultry lighting has several aspects that can significantly improve animal welfare and performance. That’s why your lighting equipment has to be able to provide an optimal light climate. Question was: how do you know what to improve to provide an optimal light climate, without being able to measure the current performances of your lighting equipment in hard numbers? From this perspective, we developed the HATO ONE.

The HATO ONE enables detailed measurement, elaborate analysis and improvements based on facts.

Measure, analyse, improve!

1. Measure

ONE tool that is able to measure all key aspects of light that matter for poultry. Measurement can be made by keeping the device in the hands or from a distance by means of an app.

Now, what can it measure?

Light intensity: The HATO ONE is able to measure the light intensity in Lux, Gallilux, and Foot Candle. The light intensity simply stands for the intensity of the light that is provided by the lamp as perceived by human beings (Lux) or in this case, chickens (Gallilux). A chicken requires different amounts of light intensities throughout its life to see and perform optimally. That’s why it’s important to provide it accordingly.

By measuring the light intensity at multiple spots in the house, it’s also possible to see whether the light distribution is correct or not. More information on light distribution and its effects on poultry can be found in our blog on why light distribution is crucial for poultry.

Light spectrum: The HATO ONE measures the light spectrum in nm. The light spectrum is the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. A proper light spectrum focused on poultry improves poultry vision. Improved vision will eventually improve welfare and performances. Always keep in mind that the light spectrum differs per specie.

Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT): HATO ONE is able to measure the CCT in degrees Kelvin. It is a specification of the colour ambiance of the light emitted. A higher light temperature, like 6000K, means that the light spectrum contains more blue light. When the light temperature is low, for example 2700K, the spectrum contains more red.

Whereas warm light can create rest in the house, cold light increases activity. Stress pecking, piling and more can be caused by choosing the wrong light colour. Every colour of the spectrum has different characteristics, and will influence poultry differently.

Light flicker: Light flicker is the (rapid) change in light output of a lamp. The HATO ONE is able to quantify light flicker in the flicker index and in percentage flicker. It’s also able to identify the frequency in Hertz. Both the amount of flicker and the frequency of it are of severe importance. Amongst others, light flicker can cause a major amount of stress for poultry. More information on light flicker and its effects on poultry can be found in our blog called ‘everything you need to know about light flicker’.

Single lamp measurement or a whole house? The HATO ONE can do both. It enables the user to measure single lamps for lamp analysis, but it’s also possible to do up to 99 measurements to get an overview of the lighting performances of the whole house.

2. Analyse

After measurement comes analysis: The HATO ONE is able to analyse the data measured via the HATO ONE App, the HATO ONE itself, via excel and via pc software. Whereas the HATO ONE App and the HATO ONE itself enable basic analysis, the export function to excel (house analysis) and the PC software (spectrum) enable a more elaborate analysis.

The HATO ONE offers several analytical functions.

Lamp vs. lamp analysis: The HATO ONE is able to compare the results measured with those of other lighting products. In this way, the user can immediately identify whether the measured lighting solutions outperform other ones or not. Amongst others, the light spectrum, the light intensity, the correlated colour temperature and the colour rendering index can be compared.

Lamp vs. poultry & human needs analysis: The HATO ONE enables the user to compare the measured results of the lamp with the lighting needs of poultry and human beings. Since the visible spectrum of poultry and human beings differs significantly, it may seem fine for human beings, but far from that for poultry. That’s why it is very important to identify whether the light (spectrum) being provided by the lamp suits the needs of the animals in the house.

House analysis: The HATO ONE doesn’t only measure single lamps. It’s also able to perform up to 99 measurements to get a good picture of the lighting situation in the entire poultry house. From this extensive measurement on, all data can be exported to excel, where the elaborate analysis begins. In this way, light distribution, uniformity, light average, etc. will be automatically calculated to give the user a complete picture of the lighting performances of the house being measured. It is even possible to convert the excel file to a professional report.

3. Improve

After analysing all data, the user will be able to start identifying the areas of improvement. Improvement based on facts. Is the light intensity too low? Does the light spectrum not match with poultry needs? Are the lamps flickering? What about the light distribution?

By looking at the results of the analysis, the user is able to point out the areas of improvement. By improving these areas, animal welfare will increase and performances will do so consequently.
